Anxiety
Do you feel like you worry too much? Are you always thinking about the things that could go wrong, and planning what to do when that happens? Do you wish you could just relax? All of us worry from time to time. Sometimes our worries get in the way of us seeing ourselves clearly or manifesting what we want, or they can get in the way of us enjoying our lives and the people we love. It’s hard to feel good or enjoy success when we worry a lot, and it’s also hard to connect with that part of ourselves that is strong and capable.
Many of my clients experience anxiety, and a longing to feel more confident in themselves and the world. If this sounds like you, we can work together to help you identify and shift the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that contribute to your anxiety, and to uncover and heal the roots that sustain the anxiety. During this process, we will help you develop tools and skills for not just managing the anxiety, but transforming it. I have found that people with anxiety are often quite sensitive, and finding ways to manage that sensitivity while mobilizing the gifts that sensitivity offers can be very helpful.
Trauma and Neglect
Did you experience childhood trauma or neglect? Do you find that you’re very reactive, often feel overwhelmed or not good enough, and tend to feel unsafe and on-guard? I work with clients who have experienced trauma and neglect to help them learn how to love and accept themselves more fully, how to feel and be safe in their bodies and relationships, and how to shift the patterns of anxiety and agitation that contribute to their suffering. Working with trauma takes time, and it’s important to work together in a way that is healing and not just triggering. This means we will be pacing ourselves, and we will use a variety of tools to help you stay in the present and not get lost in the past. We will also be connecting with your strengths and resources to support you in your healing and help you build a life where you feel safe, loved, and in control.
Narcissistic Mother/ Parent
Did you emotionally take care of one or both of your parents while you were growing up? Do you have the feeling that you’ve never been mothered? Many of my clients have had experiences of inadequate or damaging mothering. There may be genuine caring and affection between them and their mothers, but often they have sacrificed parts of themselves in order to take care of a mother who is narcissistic and wounded. Often, their mothers’ needs drove and overwhelmed the family. Maybe their mothers were emotional and explosive, or depressed and suicidal, or addicts. But the result for my clients is that they had to take care of their parent rather than the other way around. This role reversal comes at a cost, and often my clients want to work with me on reclaiming their independent senses of self, working through anxiety or depression, reconnecting with feelings that weren’t ok to have as a child, and forging relationships where they and their needs are valued.
Caretakers
Do you find yourself taking care of others more than they take care of you? Many of my clients are caretakers – people who are skilled at taking care of others but have a harder time taking care of themselves. Often, these folks feel things strongly – it’s easy for them to empathize with others, and to see what needs to be done to help others feel good and safe. Sometimes they grew up with trauma or neglect, and learned to take care of others as a survival strategy. Other times, they are just highly empathic and sensitive, and have learned to do what they can to keep others comfortable and happy. People who are caretakers often come to therapy to learn how to have a voice in their lives and relationships. Often, their relationships feel out of balance, and they can feel resentful and like their needs aren’t getting met. Their time in therapy helps them learn to identify and express what they want, how to honor their own rhythms, and how to build relationships and work lives that are satisfying and fulfilling, where they receive as much as they give.
Spiritual Exploration/ Transformation
Some people seek therapy with me because they feel a longing to work both psychologically and spiritually. They may have experienced wounding from religious traditions or spiritual communities, or they may want to open to or deepen a sense of connection to the sacred. Often, these clients have a sense that tapping into the spiritual domain can help them heal in the emotional and relationship domains. Sometimes, my clients are having mystical experiences that they don’t understand, and they want help navigating the energy they are feeling while staying grounded in their lives and work. If you wish to work spiritually as well as psychologically, I will do my best to honor and respect your unique relationship to the divine, and to support you in the ways you need to grow and craft that relationship.
